What is a self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)?

An SCBA is a respirator in which the entire air supply is carried by the wearer in a pressurised cylinder, feeding a full facepiece through a regulator. Because nothing tethers the user to a compressor or a manifold, it is the correct choice for entry into an atmosphere that is immediately dangerous to life or health, or for any work where a supply hose cannot follow the wearer.

The distinction that matters when ordering is against the airline respirator, which draws from a remote air source through a hose. Both appear under supplied air respirators, but they are not interchangeable in a rescue plan. How do I choose an MSA AirHawk II configuration?

The AirHawk II is one platform sold in a build matrix, and every stocked variant is a combination of four choices: facepiece, head harness, cylinder, and case. Getting those four right at order time is the whole specification.

What is the difference between a 30 minute and a 45 minute SCBA?

The rating is the cylinder’s nominal duration at a standard breathing rate, not a guaranteed working time, and real duration falls with exertion. The practical trade is duration against weight and bulk, and the AirHawk II range is stocked at both ratings so the choice is a purchasing decision rather than a special order.

The carried weight, not the rating, is usually what settles it. In this category the 30 minute units are offered with either an aluminium cylinder or an L30 Stealth carbon cylinder at the same 30 minute duration, while the 45 minute units use Kevlar or nylon wrapped high pressure cylinders. If a team is already tired at the halfway point of a 30 minute bottle, the honest fix is often a lighter 30 minute cylinder rather than a heavier 45 minute one.

What SCBA cylinders and parts do I need to keep a fleet in service?
