Product Comparison Summary
- Viscosity: All products are light oils (ISO VG 32) except the Oven Chain Lubricant, which behaves as a thicker semi-fluid at operating temperature. Lighter oils (1001, Medallion) penetrate easily but may require more frequent reapplication, while heavier/tacky formulations (Open Chain, Oven Chain) adhere better.
- Temperature Capability: 1001 is for ambient temperatures only; Open Chain handles -25°F to 200°F; Medallion covers -40°F to 180°F for food environments; and Oven Chain Lubricant is engineered for extreme heat (up to 752°F).
- Food-Grade Rating: Medallion and Oven Chain Lubricant are NSF H1 certified. 1001 and Open Chain are general industrial lubricants and should not be used where food contact is a concern.
- Key Use Cases: Choose 1001 for multipurpose maintenance and light-duty chains, Open Chain for heavy-duty industrial applications, Medallion for food processing machinery, and Oven Chain Lubricant for extreme high-temperature environments.
How to Select the Right Chain Lubricant
- Operating Environment (Temperature & Conditions): For high-temperature environments, use Oven Chain Lubricant. For very cold environments, Medallion remains fluid down to -40°F. For ambient or moderate temperatures, Open Chain or 1001 are sufficient.
- Load and Duty Cycle: Heavy loads or continuous operation require lubricants with extreme pressure additives. Oven Chain and Open Chain are designed for high stress, while 1001 and Medallion suit low to medium loads.
- Lubrication Frequency & Method: If re-lubrication is infrequent, choose a product that stays in place longer (like Open Chain or Oven Chain). For systems with automatic lubrication, ensure compatibility with the chosen product.
- Cleanliness and Regulatory Requirements: In food or clean processing environments, select NSF H1 products (Medallion or Oven Chain) to meet regulatory standards. For outdoor or industrial settings, non-food-grade products are sufficient.
Maintenance and Application Tips
- Clean the Chain Before Lubrication: Remove old lubricant, dirt, and debris using a solvent or designated chain cleaner before applying new oil. A clean, dry chain improves adhesion.
- Apply at the Right Time/Condition: Apply lubricant when the chain is warm (but not too hot) or immediately after operation to aid penetration. For high-temperature chains, avoid application at peak temperatures.
- Use Proper Application Methods: Use aerosol spray, manual brushing, or drip feeding. Follow manufacturer guidelines, especially for automatic lubrication systems.
- Avoid Over-Lubrication: Excess lubricant can fling off, attracting dust and contaminants. Apply moderately and wipe off any excess to maintain an even film on critical areas.
- Regular Inspection: Check chains periodically for dryness or wear. Adjust lubrication intervals based on operating hours and environmental exposure.
- Special Considerations for Food-Grade Lubes: Ensure application equipment is clean to avoid cross-contamination. For oven chains, use low-drip formulations to prevent free oil from falling.
- Storage and Handling: Store lubricants in a cool, dry place and agitate high-temp lubricants before use to evenly suspend additives.
