What is the Spectrex FS Series flame simulator?
The Spectrex FS Series flame simulator is Emerson’s portable test source for Spectrex SharpEye flame detectors. It emits radiation in the sequential pattern that one Spectrex detector type reads as a fire, so a technician can trigger the detector from a distance and prove the alarm loop without an open flame. Emerson lists 40/40, 20/20 and 20/20M Series detectors as compatible, and the simulator comes in three models, each matched to one detector technology: FS-1100, FS-1200 and FS-1400.
One activation checks more than the sensor. The data sheet names the detector’s internal electronics, its alarm software, the cleanliness of the viewing window, wiring integrity, relay activation and any mA, RS-485 or HART output in use.
Selection note: the simulator is matched to the detector, it is not universal. Use the FS-1100 for triple infrared (IR3) detectors, the FS-1200 for UV and UV/IR detectors and the FS-1400 for Multi IR detectors. The 40/40D and 40/40C data sheets map them by model letter: FS-1100 to the -I model, FS-1200 to the -LB and -L4B models, FS-1400 to the -M model.

Where is the Spectrex FS Series flame simulator used, and when is another Emerson model the better fit?
The FS Series is a commissioning and maintenance tool for Spectrex flame detection. Local standards and authorities ask for periodic end-to-end loop tests, and the data sheet notes that many owners of high-value, high-risk facilities want them quarterly, with an external simulator. Typical jobs:
- proof testing detectors mounted high on structures from floor or deck level, with no scaffolding or ladders;
- confirming a clear line of sight and correct aiming after installation or a layout change;
- checking that the detector window is clean enough to see a real fire;
- testing inside classified areas, since the simulator is approved for Zones 1 and 2 and Zones 21 and 22.
Emerson states the tool is ideal for NFPA, SIL2 and local authority testing requirements. Matching detectors on this site include the Spectrex 20/20Q flame detector and the SharpEye 40/40D and 40/40C variants linked in the quote section below.
Selection note: match the simulator to the detector brand. For the Rosemount 975 flame detector Emerson lists a separate Rosemount Flame Simulator in three models (FS-HR-975, FS-IR-975 and FS-UVIR-975); the FS-1100, FS-1200 and FS-1400 are specified for Spectrex detectors.
Which approvals, outputs and documents apply to the Spectrex FS Series flame simulator?
The simulators are ATEX and IECEx approved for Zones 1 and 2 and Zones 21 and 22. Markings as printed in the data sheet:
| FS-1100, FS-1400 | ATEX, IECEx; Ex II 2 G D; Ex db ib op is IIB + H2 T4 Gb; Ex ib op is tb IIIC T135 °C Db; -4 °F to +122 °F (-20 °C to +50 °C); Water and dust-tight: IP65 |
|---|---|
| FS-1200 | ATEX, IECEx; Ex II 2 G D; Ex db ib IIB + H2 T4 Gb; Ex ib tb IIIC T135 °C Db; -4 °F to +122 °F (-20 °C to +50 °C); Water and dust-tight IP65 |
| Product certification option | -K: Technical Regulations Customs Union (EAC) Kazakhstan Flameproof |
| RoHS | RoHS directive 2011/65/EU, 2015/863 |
| EMC immunity tests | IEC 61000-4-2 (6 kV/8 kV contact/air), IEC 61000-4-3, IEC 61000-4-6, MIL-STD-1275B; IEC 61000-6-3 radiated emission |
The outputs a test proves are the detector’s own (relays, mA, RS-485, HART). Emerson keeps the full approval list in the Spectrex SharpEye Flame Simulators manual. Data sheet: Spectrex SharpEye Flame Simulators data sheet, document MS-00913-0100-1100, Rev. AB of August 2026. Emerson model page: Spectrex FS Series Flame Simulator on Emerson.com.
Installation note: the three markings are not identical. The FS-1100 and FS-1400 are marked Ex db ib op is IIB + H2 T4 Gb, while the FS-1200 is marked Ex db ib IIB + H2 T4 Gb, without the op is code, so compare the marking of the model you carry with the classification of the zone. All three are rated for -4 °F to +122 °F (-20 °C to +50 °C), a narrower band than the operating range of the 40/40 and 20/20Q detectors they test.
How do I request a quote for the Spectrex FS Series flame simulator?
Send PE Energy the simulator model, chosen by detector technology, and the quantity:

Replacement note: older detectors are covered as well. The data sheet lists testing distances for legacy Spectrex models, including the 40/40I, 40/40 UFI, 40/40M, 40/40L4 and L4B, 40/40U, UB, L and LB, 40/40UFL and 20/20ML, plus the 20/20MPI and the 20/20MI in its -1 version, so a site with mixed detector generations can still be tested with these three simulator models. Tell us which detector models are installed and we match a simulator to each.
Which FS model tests which Spectrex detector, and from how far?
Data sheet values, written as sensitivity setting: testing distance.
| FS-1100: 40/40D-I, 40/40C-I | 50 ft. (15 m): 5 ft. (1.5 m); 100 ft. (30 m): 13 ft. (4 m); 150 ft. (45 m): 20 ft. (6 m); 215 ft. (65 m): 30 ft. (9 m); 300 ft. (90 m): 36 ft. (11 m) |
|---|---|
| FS-1100: 20/20Q | 9.8 ft. (3 m): N/A; 32.8 ft. (10 m): 6.6 ft. (2 m); 65.6 ft. (20 m): 16.4 ft. (5 m); 98.4 ft. (30 m): 24.6 ft. (7.5 m); 147.6 ft. (45 m): 29.5 ft. (9 m) |
| FS-1100: 20/20MPI, 20/20MI-1 | 33 ft. (10 m): 6.6 ft. (2 m); 65 ft. (20 m): 8.2 ft. (2.5 m); 100 ft. (30 m): 19.6 ft. (6 m); 132 ft. (40 m): 26.2 ft (8 m) |
| FS-1200: 40/40D-L4B | 93 ft. (28 m): 6 ft. (2 m) |
| FS-1200: 40/40D, C-LB | 10 ft. (3 m): 3 ft. (1 m); 93 ft. (28 m): 46 ft. (14 m) (40/40D-LB only) |
| FS-1400: 40/40D, C-M | 50 ft. (15 m): 2 ft. (0.6 m); 100 ft. (30 m): 6 ft. (2 m); 150 ft. (45 m): 8 ft. (2.5 m); 215 ft. (65 m): 16 ft. (5 m); 300 ft. (90 m): 26 ft. (8 m) |
Maintenance note: at the lowest 20/20Q setting, 9.8 ft. (3 m), the table gives no testing distance (N/A). Every other row pairs the detector’s sensitivity setting with the distance at which the simulator still triggers an alarm, so a test plan can be written per detector model.
