What is Val-Tex 972 valve lube sealant?

Val-Tex 972 is a black lube sealant for valves in high-pressure, high-temperature oil and gas service, made by Val-Tex in Houston. It contains moly-disulfide to cut operating torque and has no fillers. It is sold as 972 sticks and as 972-S in bulk.

From the Val-Tex 972 specification sheet: worked penetration at 77°F (ASTM D217) is 234 typical in bulk and 104 mm typical in stick form. The dropping point (ASTM D566) is over 500°F for both. NLGI consistency is 3 for bulk and 6 for sticks, and the lubrication range is -20°F to +600°F typical. The 972 SDS (version 04, 30 April 2024) lists a flash point of 500°F (260°C), Cleveland Open Cup.

Which valves is Val-Tex 972 made for?

972 is built for plug valves in high-pressure, high-temperature oil and gas service, and Val-Tex also describes it as a general-purpose sealant for valves in that service. Before you switch sealants, check the sealant chart for your valve model.

Mixing: the Val-Tex 972 specification sheet states that mixing 972 with other lubricants or sealants has no adverse effect.

What pressure is Val-Tex 972 rated for?

Val-Tex does not publish a pressure rating for 972. Its specification sheet describes it only as formulated for high-pressure, high-temperature oil and gas service. The working pressure is set by the valve and by the injection equipment, so use the valve maker’s sealant chart and the rating of your injection gun and fittings.

Which Val-Tex 972 package do I need?

972 sticks load into a stick-type sealant injection gun for valve-by-valve service, and bulk 972-S is for pumps and cartridges. Val-Tex makes 972 sticks in B, C, D, G, J, K and V sizes, and 972-S in P packs, 12 oz cartridges, 10 lb cans, 40 lb pails, 120 lb drums and 440 lb drums.
