X-Series Breathers are the perfect solution for high humidity and high dust environments. To extend the desiccant’s life, the X-Series incorporates two check valves and a reusable top cap. The check valves provide a closed system until airflow is required, extending the service life of the desiccant. Specifically, the intake check valve allows airflow into the breather only when differential pressure between the atmosphere and fluid reservoir exceeds a 0.3-psi threshold, while the exhaust check valve permits air to exit the reservoir when the differential pressure exceeds a 0.3-psi threshold. When the gold silica gel cartridge turns dark green, simply install a new replacement cartridge to keep things moving.
All X-Series models feature two 2 micron filters, one on the inlet and a second on the outlet.
Operating Temperature: -20°F (-29°C) to +200°F (+93°C)
High Humidity / High Dust Applications – Paper Mills • Wash-Down Areas • Steam-Cleaning Rooms • Mine Quarries

How do you size a desiccant breather for a gearbox or hydraulic reservoir?
Size it by air flow. Air Sentry says all of its breathers handle gearbox thermal expansion and gravity filling or draining, but when a pump fills or drains the gearbox, the breather’s air flow capacity must match the pump. For a hydraulic reservoir breather, size from the pump’s oil flow (gpm) converted to air flow (cfm).
Sizing rule: the X-50 is rated for 10 cfm of air flow and 75 gpm of reservoir fluid flow, so keep pump flow at or below 75 gpm. Above that, the X-501 to X-522 models are rated 20 cfm and 150 gpm.

Air Sentry X-50 vs X-100: which desiccant tank breather fits?
Both are rated 10 cfm and 75 gpm with a ½” FNPT connection, so the differences are size, silica gel capacity and cartridge. Air Sentry lists its X-100 Wash Down Cap as compatible with the X-100 model, useful in wash-down areas.
X-100, same spec table: 6.25 in (15.9 cm) tall, 3.25 in (8.3 cm) diameter, 0.8 lb (0.4 kg) silica gel, 4.91 fl oz (145 mL) adsorption capacity, L-143 cartridge.
When should you replace the X-50 desiccant breather cartridge?
Replace the L-50 cartridge when the silica gel has turned from gold to dark green; the X-Series top cap is reusable. Watch where the change starts: Air Sentry says gel turning dark green from the bottom rather than the top indicates excessive moisture inside the reservoir.
Why use a gearbox breather with check valves in humid or dusty plants?
Air Sentry describes most older-style air vents as providing minimal, if any, contamination control. X-Series check valves keep the system closed until airflow is required, extending desiccant life, and the silica gel bed filters out up to 95% of incoming water vapor, per the manufacturer.
Manufacturer case study: X-100 breathers (one size up) were installed on 500 gearboxes at a construction-materials manufacturer; Air Sentry reports gearbox failures reduced by 50% and lubricant changes cut from twice a year to once a year. Savings vary with lubricant, labor and downtime costs, the study notes.
