What is CK-4 diesel oil, and which trucks need it?
Lucas formulates its CK-4 oils (also searched as CK 4 or CK4 oil) for modern diesel engines that run on ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and carry emission control systems such as DPF and SCR. Each current Lucas CK-4 data sheet lists API CK-4 among the specifications the oil meets or exceeds.
From the data sheets: the 15W-40 oils provide soot control and TBN retention, and Lucas describes them as well suited to higher mileage engines and to mixed fleets where older and newer vehicles share one motor oil.
CK-4 vs CJ-4: can CK-4 oil go in older diesel engines?
Lucas states that its 15W-40 and 10W-30 CK-4 oils are fully backward compatible with the earlier API CJ-4 and CI-4 Plus standards, and its 5W-40 with prior standards such as CJ-4. Confirm the SAE grade and OEM specification in your engine manual against the data sheet list.

Which Lucas CK-4 engine oil grade fits your fleet: 5W-40, 10W-30 or 15W-40?
Start with the SAE grade your engine maker specifies, because Lucas recommends each CK-4 engine oil for engines specifying that grade. Synthetic 5W-40 is the fully synthetic oil Lucas designed for extremely cold temperatures; the 15W-40 comes as Synthetic or Synthetic Blend, each with its own part numbers (listed below).
