The DES-CASE HydroGuard Series consists of two desiccant breather models — the DC-HG-1 (Miniature) and DC-HG-8 (Standard) — engineered specifically for low-flow, steady-state operations where moisture and particulate contamination pose the greatest risk to fluid cleanliness. Typical applications include totes, drums, transformers, gearboxes, storage tanks, and hydraulic reservoirs operating in high-humidity environments or subject to wash-down conditions.

Both models are REACH compliant and compatible with all mineral oils, most synthetic oils, and diesel fuels. Housing materials include Nylon 6/6 30% Glass Filled, Polycarbonate, and Polypropylene — engineered for chemical resistance across pulp and paper, petrochemical, manufacturing, and power generation environments.

How Does the HydroGuard Series Filter Particulate and Moisture?

Both DC-HG-1 and DC-HG-8 achieve 3 μm absolute filter efficiency using polyester and polyurethane filter media. Silica gel hydrophilic media adsorbs incoming moisture before it contacts the reservoir fluid. A check valve with a cracking pressure of just 0.1 psi (0.007 bar) opens to allow airflow while minimizing contamination ingression during low-pressure breathing cycles.

Visual saturation indication is built in: silica gel transitions from blue to pink as moisture capacity is consumed, giving maintenance technicians a clear, no-instrument signal for replacement. Both models operate across a temperature range of -20°F to 200°F (-29°C to 93°C).

What Are the Desiccant Capacity and Airflow Differences Between DC-HG-1 and DC-HG-8?

Selecting the correct model requires matching desiccant capacity and airflow rating to the application’s reservoir volume and breathing demand:

  • DC-HG-1 (Miniature): 0.3 lbs (127 g) of silica gel; maximum water retention of 1.7 fl oz (50 ml); max airflow of 1 cfm (40 l/min) at ΔP 1 psi; suitable for gearboxes, pumps, and storage tanks up to 50 gal (189 L).
  • DC-HG-8 (Standard): 0.8 lbs (365 g) of silica gel; maximum water retention of 5 fl oz (144 ml); max airflow of 14 cfm (396 l/min) at ΔP 1 psi; suitable for gearboxes, pumps, and storage tanks up to 400 gal (1,514 L), and hydraulic or central lube reservoirs up to 55 gal (208 L).

The DC-HG-1 is not rated for hydraulic and central lube reservoir applications; the DC-HG-8 is required for those use cases. Maximum reservoir fluid flow or displacement is 11 gpm (40 l/min) for the DC-HG-1 and 105 gpm (396 l/min) for the DC-HG-8, both measured at ΔP 1 psi (0.07 bar).
