What Is the Des-Case Extreme Duty Series Breather?

The Des-Case DC-XD-6W is the flagship model in Des-Case’s Extreme Duty Series — described by the manufacturer as their most versatile breather solution. Designed for harsh, high-vibration, and mobile environments, it combines desiccant filtration, a check valve, and ePTFE filter media inside an aluminum and polycarbonate housing rated from -40°F to 300°F (-40°C to 149°C). The unit is REACH compliant and compatible with all mineral oils, most synthetic oils, and diesel fuels.

The breather is built for demanding industries including pulp and paper, mining, petrochemical, forestry, and automotive, as well as nautical and off-road mobile equipment applications where contamination control is critical.

How Does the DC-XD-6W Filter Contaminants?

The DC-XD-6W achieves 0.3 μm absolute filter efficiency using a combination of ePTFE, polyester, and polyurethane filter media. This sub-micron rating stops particulate contamination before it enters the reservoir headspace during the inward breathing cycle.

For moisture control, the unit contains 1.6 lbs (729 g) of silica gel desiccant with a maximum water adsorption capacity of 9 fl oz (270 ml). The silica gel uses a color-change indicator that shifts from orange to white when the desiccant is saturated, giving maintenance technicians a clear visual cue for replacement without disassembly or testing.

A check valve with a cracking pressure of 0.1 psi (0.007 bar) allows free airflow while preventing back-contamination during pressure fluctuations.

What Reservoir Sizes Can the DC-XD-6W Handle?

Des-Case provides the following general sizing guidelines for the DC-XD-6W:

  • Gearbox, pump, and storage tank: up to 500 gal (1,893 L)
  • Hydraulic and central lube reservoir: up to 200 gal (757 L)

Maximum airflow is rated at 16 cfm (456 L/min) at ΔP 1 psi (0.07 bar), and maximum reservoir fluid flow or displacement is 120 gpm (456 L/min) at the same differential pressure.
