Jet-Lube V-2 Thread Sealant: Lead-Free, NSF-61 Potable-Water Sealing to 500°F

What Is Jet-Lube V-2 and What Makes It Different?

Jet-Lube V-2 Multi-Purpose Thread Sealant is a soft-setting, nonpetroleum-based thread sealant for threaded connections carrying potable water, other liquids, and gases. It is built on a vegetable-oil fluid and reinforced with PTFE and natural fillers, which the data sheet credits for tighter joint make-up through added thread lubrication. The sealant is nontoxic and environmentally safe, contains no lead or metals, and is water-resistant, non-staining, and low-odor.

V-2 is brushable down to 0°F (-18°C) and carries a service rating of -70°F (-57°C) to 500°F (260°C). It is ivory/beige and semi-fluid, with a specific gravity of 1.38, a Brookfield viscosity of 160,000–240,000 cps (#7 spindle, 5 rpm at 77°F), and a minimum five-year shelf life from manufacture.

Why Do NSF 61 and AB1953 Compliance Matter for V-2?

The defining feature of V-2 is what it leaves out: no lead and no metals. That lets it carry NSF/ANSI 61 certification (including Annex G) for potable-water contact and meet California’s lead-free law AB1953 (Health & Safety Code Section 116875) and Vermont Act 193.

Beyond drinking-water codes, V-2 is NSF P-1 registered (#121265) for use in federally inspected meat and poultry plants, meets U.S. military specification TT-S-1732, is listed under the Uniform Plumbing Code (IAPMO file #1282), and satisfies British Standard 6920 Part 2 with a UK WFBS listing. For a crew, that certification stack is the documentation an inspector expects on a potable-water joint.

What Pressure and Temperature Can V-2 Seal?

V-2 carries a broad service rating of up to 10,000 psi on liquids and 2,000 psi on gases, and it allows immediate pressurization after assembly (some applications may call for a dry time for best results). It is not for use on oxygen lines.

The product’s UL of Canada listing gives the maximum sealing pressures for specific media on pipe up to 3½ inches in diameter: 1,500 psi for natural gas and methane, 250 psi for propane and butane, 175 psi for water, and 145 psi for diesel and petroleum oils. V-2 also passed a natural-gas pressure test at 2,250 psi over ten days at 73°F, and it earns a 1A copper-strip corrosion rating (ASTM D4048).

Which Threads and Materials Is V-2 Approved For?

V-2 is approved for stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, iron, polyethylene, reinforced fiberglass, and PVC. The one important limit: it should not be used on ABS or CPVC.

For ABS and CPVC threads, Jet-Lube specifies the TFW Thread Sealant with PTFE instead. Matching the sealant to the substrate is the most common selection mistake V-2’s data sheet calls out.

How Does V-2 Fit Alongside V-2 Plus, TFW, and TF-15?

V-2 anchors Jet-Lube’s potable-water, code-compliant sealant line. V-2 Plus is the step-up sibling in the same family for heavier-duty connections, while TFW is the specified choice for ABS and CPVC plastics. TF-15 is a separate Jet-Lube pipe thread sealant offered by the gallon for high-volume pipe work.

Because V-2 covers stainless, brass, copper, iron, PVC, polyethylene, and fiberglass, a single product often consolidates what would otherwise be several sealants on the truck — provided ABS and CPVC are routed to TFW.

Summary

  • Jet-Lube V-2 is a soft-setting, nonpetroleum (vegetable-oil) thread sealant with PTFE and natural fillers, containing no lead or metals.
  • It is NSF/ANSI 61 certified for potable water and compliant with AB1953 and Vermont Act 193; also NSF P-1 (#121265), TT-S-1732, UPC (IAPMO #1282), and BS 6920.
  • Service rating is -70°F to 500°F; brushable to 0°F; up to 10,000 psi liquids / 2,000 psi gases (UL sealing maxima: 1,500 psi gas, 175 psi water on pipe up to 3½").
  • Approved for stainless, aluminum, brass, copper, iron, PVC, polyethylene, and fiberglass — but NOT ABS or CPVC (use Jet-Lube TFW).
  • Not for oxygen lines; minimum five-year shelf life; 1A copper-strip corrosion rating.
